Reading the Room

Here’s the latest episode of Agility at Work, the podcast I cohost with my Harvard Kennedy School colleague, Kim Leary. After February 28, content like this will continue to be available, though for subscribers only. There’s a special, on-going discount for those who hop aboard now but it ends this month. My weekly articles and shorter posts will still be available to everyone. For more on Jazz of Negotiation, see the Welcome.

Our Agility at Work guest this time is Erin Egan. She does business development for Amazon—acquiring technology, partnering with other companies, and sometimes taking a leading role in buying them. Erin previously did this sort of work for Microsoft and, in France, with Airbus. In short, she’s a full-time negotiator.

And Erin has a rare gift. I’d call it social radar. It’s the ability to interpret interpersonal behavior—spotting who may not be telling the truth, for example, and who else may have a hidden agenda. Important stuff to know when you’re negotiating. Take a listen!
