July Pop Quiz: One Question
A quick word first

We often think and express ourselves metaphorically, associating one thing with another even when the two may seem quite different in most respects. For example, this morning Tropical Storm Elsa is sweeping by our coastal home. We’re safe and dry, but outside it’s “raining cats and dogs.” (Where in the world did that analogy ever come from?)
Easier to understand is the Scots poet Robert Burns, who wrote, “O my Love is like a red, red rose.” His metaphor is clear, given the sweetness of that flower’s fragrance and the warmth of its color.1
Now I’m going to ask you for a metaphor. Have pen and paper handy. I’d like you to jot down the very first thing that comes to mind, when you read the question below. It’s in bold print right below the portrait of Bobby Burns.
If love is like a red, red rose . . . What is negotiation like?
Jot down the very first thing that came to your mind. It will be interesting to see how Jazz readers respond. Kindly enter your metaphor on the confidential survey I’ve posted. Here’s the link.
I’ve used this exercise in class numerous times and have gotten vastly different replies. I’ll write an article about this after the returns are in.
Many thanks! Mike

If you’re curious about Burns’ short poem, here’s a link. You’ll note that he was apparently so smitten, and the object of his affection so special, he instead wrote “Luve” instead of the conventional “Love.”
