Telling Your Boss, "I quit."
A quick word first
Thanks for visiting Jazz of Negotiation! When you have a chance, check out the About page to see the aim of this publication and learn how it can help you become a more effective negotiator.
I’ve written a fair amount about negotiating a job offer—and I expect to write more. But what about the flip side: What’s the best way to break up with your boss?
We’re in the so-called Great Resignation era, so it’s a timely question. Studies show that anywhere from 25% to perhaps 50% of the workforce is thinking about “moving on” (to employ the euphemism). Maybe you’re one of them. Or maybe you have a friend or colleague who’s thinking about quitting and who could use your good advice.
If so, check out the new 12-minute video, “Do you really know how to quit your job?” It’s produced by Christine Liu, Innovation Editor at Harvard Business Publishing. She interviews Dorie Clark who teaches at Duke University and writes prolifically about managing one’s career. Clark’s latest book, The Long Game, was just released earlier this week.
In the interview, Christine helpfully demonstrates some do’s and don’ts (mostly the latter, in fact) when telling your boss you’re leaving. The examples are a blunt reminders of the mess you can make if you don’t prepare carefully.
